About Us

During the Blizzard of 1979, when a homeless man was found frozen to death  in a dumpster, a group of neighborhood volunteers responded by providing  overnight emergency shelter during winter months in the Uptown/Edgewater neighborhood on Chicago’s north side. Thirty years later, the need is even more pressing.

REST is now a comprehensive homeless services provider operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year. In FY ’09 REST served 1,242 unduplicated homeless clients with bare necessities. Our programs include social services with individual case management and life skills classes, interim housing (100 beds) permanent housing (100 apartments), emergency shelter, food, clothing and a weekly volunteer medical clinic. Over more than thirty years of helping homeless people, REST has sheltered tens of thousands of clients, served over a million meals and housed over one thousand people.  REST has saved countless lives and helped our clients to begin again.

Our mission is to work collaboratively to provide safe, quality, permanent and emergency housing and social services to men and women who are homeless. We need your help to sustain REST’s work.  Please consider donating your time, your goods and/or your money.
